The Dunn Planning Department provides professional planning expertise, facilitates land use regulation, and directs the comprehensive planning process for the orderly growth and development of the City and its environs. The Department is customer service oriented. It is our philosophy to balance the physical and social needs of the City's diverse constituencies while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

The City of Dunn has jurisdiction of Planning and Zoning within its corporate limits, as well as the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). The ETJ extends, in some places, as much as one mile from the city limits. Properties located in the ETJ are under the City of Dunn's jurisdiction and therefore must comply with the City of Dunn Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances. To find out if your property is located with the Dunn planning jurisdiction, and to find out what your property is zoned, you may see a current version of the Dunn Zoning Map download, visit the Planning office and inspect the paper map or you my contact the Planning and Zoning Department with the address and owner's information.

The Planning and Zoning Department is responsible for the maintenance and enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance, Code Enforcement, and issuing development and sign permits. The Department is also responsible for all long range planning, such as the Land Use Plan and Strategic Plan, as well as current planning issues such as Rezoning requests, Conditional Use permits, and commercial site plan review.

The Planning Administrator serves as staff to the Board of Adjustments and to the Planning Board, which is an advisory Board to the City Council. All rezoning, conditional use permits, code amendments and major subdivision plats are reviewed by the Planning Board and their recommendations are forwarded to the City Council.

Questions regarding planning and zoning issues should be directed to the Planning Staff in the Planning and Zoning Department. For more information on cases being considered for rezoning, conditional use permit, code amendments, or major subdivision plat approval, the minutes and agendas for the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment meetings are available at the municipal building. Copies of both the Zoning Ordinance and the Subdivision Ordinance are also available for reference in the municipal building Dunn Public library and online.
